What will you do??

Was reading an article earlier HERE about the expectation of the rising costs of groceries. Groceries are expected to increase in price by 3 to 5% by the end of 2010.

With that cheerful thought, tell me some ideas you will incorporate to save your family money on groceries.

a few ideas here

grow more of what we can eat
eat less meat
eat proper portion sizes
plan ahead

  1. I hope to have a small garden next year. Other than that I'm not more sure....more homemade bread and more pasta & rice meals and less of the good dishes we've grown to like, sounds like a good plan.

  2. One way we cut back here is by using venison. Unclaimed and donated venison is sold by local processors for about $60 per deer. That can approach 100# and is very lean--and free range meat that isd antibiotic-free. This past year we got 4 deer and are almost completely out now.

Another thing I do is make burrito beans, black bean soup, or lentil-rice casserole nearly every day. Beans and legumes contain lots of protein, fiber, and are much easier on the pocketbook!

  3. I've tried a garden several years now and for a variety of reasons each has been unsuccessful. I am planning to build raised beds in the next week or so and then really tend to that garden come spring!

We are also considering leasing an apple tree, which ultimately yields apples at around 50c/lb!

Ofcourse, I will continue to stockpile as good sales on "staples" for our family are available.

  4. We are always looking for more "Free" food, like apples from a tree down the road, wild asperagus, and black walnuts from a neighbor. I also check out the dented and reduced shelf at the supermarket to see what bargains I can find. I just got four dented 4# cans of solid white albacore tuna for $3 each. I purchased them all and recanned them into 32 jars (8oz each) of tuna. I am always on the lookout for a deal that I can stash away for the "rainy day" that is comming.
