Weather changes

wow, we have had some weather changes here lately.  A nice drop in the temps.  Some are using their heat, of course I smile because I have my windows up with fans going.  I love cooler weather, and snuggling in my bed under quilts.  We have been down in the 40's at night. Delish!!

So I was checking my bill online and there is an option(Entergy customer) to have your bill analyzed.  It is a very helpful tool, it tells you how much less your bill was than last month and how much less power you used.  Check out that option, it will help you to know what is going on with your electric usage.

What are your plans to save on heating costs for this year?  I would love to hear your thoughts on this.  We do not use our gas furnace.  We have one of those heaters like they use in those Amish fireplaces.  They really work and are worth the extra cost.  Our electric bill stayed lower using that for heat than it did running the a/c this summer.  And we stayed plenty warm.  We wear out long sleeves inside and warm socks.  I would rather be on the cool side than too hot, and when I get really cold I do have an electric heater to place right beside me for immediate heat.  I only used it a few times last year.

  1. We have propane heat that really doesn't warm a home very well. So about 4 years ago we bought a wood burning stove to insert into our fireplace. I LOVE IT! I love the smell of wood burning! We couldn't wait to get it going this year. Last weekend we were able to have a fire. It warms the front room very well. We like to keep the bedrooms cooler and pile on all of the blankets. It is lovely and cozy! It has definitely saved us from having to fill the propane tank too often. We were filling it about 3 or 4 times a year, but now I only fill it once. I can afford to fill it up now instead of only 150 gallons every couple of months. I would say the wood stove was the best investment we ever made.

  2. I was cold for about a month and finally turned on my heat when the weekend temps were supposed to go below 40. Today, my house was 70 and I was too hot! Argh! never happy!
Last Columbus Day (2011) we took a vacation to Cape Ann Mass and were shocked when we ended up with temps in the 80s. We'd packed for normal fall temps.

To me it's all about how pretty the sky is in October in the Northeast!.

I have a coal stove. It makes it nice and cozy in here (I don't use it until it gets really cold) but the cost of coal has tripled in ten years... because of gas prices. I suppose that, even if gas prices dipped and that is so unlikely) they won't drop coal prices because we've been willing to pay it (had no choice!)

  3. Stopping by as part of the Come To The Table hop.

Great Idea - I like sleeping in a cool room with blankets and fans on - wierd I know - but I can't sleep if I'm hot - lovin' the cooler weather!

  4. I'm not much help since my place is heated by natural gas. But it sounds like you keep your home nice and cozy! I remember as a kid that I loved curling up by my parents' wood stove. Thanks for reminding me that I miss those winters!
